We were delighted to welcome BBC Radio Norfolk to The Old Station, Snettisham, to record an interview about our unique holiday accommodation and the ongoing restoration of this much-loved former railway station.
The conversation wasn’t just about creating somewhere special for guests to stay—it was about preserving a small but important piece of Norfolk’s railway heritage and ensuring its stories continue to be told for future generations.
One of the highlights of the interview was talking about Sir John Betjeman, whose visit to Snettisham formed part of his celebrated railway journeys. His affection for the station was unmistakable. Describing Snettisham, he remarked that it had “all the little characteristics that I like about a country station”, praising its quirky touches, including the topiary hedge spelling out the station’s name and the Great Eastern Railway initials incorporated into the ironwork of the bench.
Those words continue to inspire us today.
One of our most rewarding restoration projects is recreating the very place where Betjeman sat while filming his visit. Using archive photographs and historical footage, we are carefully restoring the scene so that visitors can once again stand where he stood, admire the same peaceful surroundings and appreciate the charm that captured his imagination more than half a century ago.
Every restoration project we undertake is carried out with respect for the station’s remarkable past. Since purchasing The Old Station in 2021, we have worked to preserve original features, uncover forgotten stories and celebrate the heritage that makes this such a special place.
We were also able to share how much we enjoy welcoming guests from across the UK and beyond. Whether they are railway enthusiasts, walkers, wildlife lovers or simply looking for somewhere a little different to stay, we hope they leave with the same affection for Snettisham Station that so many visitors have felt over the years.
The interview also recognised the wonderful encouragement we’ve received from the local community, fellow railway enthusiasts and everyone who has followed our restoration journey. Your support continues to inspire us as we bring another chapter of the station’s history back to life.
